The Step Pyramid of Saqqara is an remain of the Saqqara necropolisin the desert south of Cairo. It is a keystone in the history of civilisation and is probably the earliest stone building of importance erected in Egypt. But it is falling apart, ravaged by looters, earthquakes and the erosive force of 4600 years of time.
For five years, a team of British and Egyptian experts have been urgently at work to rescue this prototype for all the Egyptian pyramids. Their efforts are focused on the sacred heart of the structure, the burial chamber of Pharaoh Djoser. The ceiling of the chamber is in imminent danger of collapse but progress is cautious and was completely brought to a halt by the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. Can the experts win the race to save the precious pyramid and preserve its secrets and treasures?
